Gymnema Background and Benefits

Gymnema is a genus of flowering plants in the family Apocynaceae, containing about 120 species. Gymnema sylvestre is one of the best known species in this genus and is usually known only by the generic name "Gymnema". Common names for Gymnema include gurmari, gurmarbooti, meshasringa,   andcowplant . It is also known as miracle fruit, although Thaumatococcus daniellii and Synsepalum dulcificum are also known by this name. Gymnema is native to southern India and Sri Lanka.
Gymnema acids are the most biologically active constituents of Gymnema leaves. These acids are chemically classified as triterpene saponins, and the individual acids in this group include gymnemic acids I- VII, gymnemic saponins, and gymnemosides A-F. Other classes of active ingredients in Gymnema leaves include various anthraquinones, flavones, and alkaloids. These leaves also contain specific constituents such as d-quercitol, butyric acid, formic acid and tartaric acid.

Chewing the leaves of G. sylvestre can suppresses the taste of sugar for two hours. This effect is caused by the gymnema acids blocking the sugar receptors of the tongue, as shown by studies on rat neurons. Gymnema has been used in herbal medicine for nearly two thousand years to support the body's natural ability to control and regulate blood sugar levels. Other historical uses of Gymnema leaves include supporting digestive health and liver function.
