Ginkgo Background and Benefits

Ginkgo biloba is a tree commonly known only as ginkgo and maidenhair tree. It is considered a living fossil because it is the only tree in its taxonomic division and its fossil record dates back 270 million years. The ginkgo is native to China, but has been cultivated in other parts of Asia since ancient times.
Ginkgo trees are slender at first, but as they aage, the crown becomes broader. Mature trees can reach a height of 164 feet and usually have deep roots that protect them from wind and snow. Ginkgo trees are extremely durable, as their wood is resistant to insects and disease, and they sprout easily.

Ginkgos are very common for several reasons. They have special significance in Buddhism and Confucianism and are regularly planted in these temples. Ginkgos are also used as food and in herbal medicine, especially in Asia.

Ginkgo extract contains an unusually large number of pharmaceutically active compounds. These include terpene trilactones such as ginkgolides A, B, C and J, and various bilobalides. Other components of ginkgo extract include flavonoid glycosides such as myricetin and quercetin. The plant contains proanthocyanidins, polyprenols, biflavones, alkylphenols, and phenolic acids. Specific compounds of ginkgo include 4-O-methylpyridoxine and 6-hydroxykynurenic acid.
