Chlorella Background and Benefits

Chlorella is a genus of green algae that includes about six species, of which C. vulgaris is one of the most commercially important. These unicellular organisms are no more than 10 micrometers in diameter and have no flagella. Chlorella species have cell bodies called chloroplasts that contain chlorophyll, which gives them their green color. Chlorella gets its name from the Greek word chloros which means green.
Chlorella usually grows on the surface of the water where it can spread quickly under good conditions. With high photosynthetic efficiency, it converts a high percentage of light energy into chemical energy. Chlorella has a photosynthetic efficiency of up to eight percent, which is comparable to the most efficient conventional plants.

Chlorella first attracted attention as a food source in the late 1940s, when many people were concerned about uncontrolled population growth. Agricultural scientists, therefore, began to look for economic ways to improve the world's food supply. By the mid-1950s, advances in agriculture made chlorella a less desirable food source than conventional crops. Since then, chlorella has been marketed mainly as a dietary supplement.

Chlorella is a high-calorie food source, especially for protein. It is also a rich source of many vitamins and minerals that provide various health benefits.

Uses of Chlorella

Immune system support is one of the most common uses of chlorella. Other benefits of chlorella include controlling body weight and heavy metals.

Signs You May Need Chlorella

The main signs that you need chlorella include a weakened immune system, which can lead to chronic illnesses and injuries that are slow to heal. Also, difficult weight control may mean that chlorella could help you, especially if you are older. Other signs that you might benefit from chlorella include unhealthy cholesterol and blood sugar levels. High levels of heavy metals such as cadmium, lead, and mercury may also support taking chlorella.
