Bacopa Background and Benefits

Bacopa is a genus of up to 100 aquatic plants, with Bacopa monnieri being one of its best known members. B. monneri is a perennial creeping herb that grows in tropical wetlands around the world. It has many common names, including bacopa, Indian pennywort, brahmi, grace herb, thyme-leaved gratiola, and water hyssop. Bacopa has long been used in the Ayurvedic system of traditional medicine in India. In Ayruveda, it is used to improve cognitive abilities and as a neurological tonic, among other uses.
Bacopa has succulent leaves that can be up to half an inch thick, with small, white flowers. It can grow in slightly brackish water and is commonly grown in aquariums, swamp gardens, hydroponics and ponds. Gardeners usually propagate Bacopa with cuttings.

Bacopa contains many biologically active constituents. Bacosides are one of the most important of these groups in dietary supplements. Triterpenoid saponins are chemically classified as bacosides and include at least 12 specific compounds. Bacopa also contains several bioactive alkaloids, including brahmin, herpestine, and nicotine. Other constituents of Bacopa include apigenin, cucurbitacin, hersaponin, monnieraside, and plantainoside.

The main health benefits of Bacopa extract are related to its effect on the production of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine and its antioxidant properties.
