Andrographis Background and Benefits

Andrographis is a genus of plants that is part of the acanthus family. Andrographis species number ranges from 19 to 44. The best-known species in this genus is Andrographis paniculata which has been historically used in many forms of traditional medicine.

All parts of Andrographis have an extremely bitter taste, which is the reason for many of their common names. In northeastern India, the plant is known as Maha-tita, which means "king of bitters." It is also called Bhumi-neem, which means "neem of the soil." The neem tree in India also has a very bitter taste. Andrographis is also called Hempedu Bumi in Malaysia, which means "gall of the earth".

Andrographis originated in India but is now grown throughout South Asia. It can grow more than a meter tall and prefers shady, moist locations. It has narrow, leaf-shaped leaves that can grow up to three inches long and one inch wide. The small flowers grow in spreading clusters called racemes. The fruit of Andrographis is a capsule less than a centimeter long, containing many seeds.

The major active constituent of Andrographis is andrographolide, which is chemically classified as a bicyclic diterpenoid lactone. Andrographolide is concentrated mainly in the leaves and was first isolated in 1911. Biochemical effects of this constituent include deposition of neutrophils in the peritoneum and reduction of cytokines. The main health benefits of andrographolide lie in its ability to support healthy inflammatory management.

Uses of Andrographis
