ATP Background and Benefits


Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) is chemically a nucleoside triphosphate. Its primary biological use is as a coenzyme in the chemical energy transfer process. All organisms use ATP, although the specific mechanisms vary widely. Karl Lohmann discovered ATP in 1929, although its specific chemical structure wasn't determined until the 1930s. German biochemist Fritz Albert Lipmann first proposed ATP as a mediator between biochemical reactions that require energy and those that supply energy. The Scottish biochemist first synthesized ATP in 1948.
The biosynthesis of ATP generally occurs by attaching three phosphate groups to the purine nucleoside adenosine. The phosphate donors in these reactions are usually adenosine monophosphate (AMP) or adenosine diphosphate (ADP), although other compounds can donate phosphate for the production of ATP. ATP synthase is required as a catalyst in reactions. The most common methods for the biosynthesis of ATP in animals are oxidative phosphorylation and substrate-level phosphorylation. Photophosphorylation is used by plants to biosynthesize ATP as part of photosynthesis.
 
Animals use Phosphorylation as part of cellular respiration. ATP and carbon dioxide are produced by combining glucose and oxygen. This process produces about 30 molecules of ATP for every molecule of glucose consumed.
 

Uses of ATP

One of the uses of ATP in dietary supplements is its effect on increasing physical energy. Other uses of ATP include supporting the digestive system, joint health and heart function.
