Health Benefits And Uses Of 5-HTP

Support for Mood Disorders

5-HTP Background and Benefits

5-Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) is a naturally occurring amino acid in the human body. It is used in the human body mainly as a precursor in the conversion of tryptophan into the neurotransmitters melatonin and serotonin.
Supplemental forms of 5-HTP are usually available in gelatin capsules and vegetarian capsules, usually in dosages of 50 and 100 mg. In the United Kingdom, it has been available in transdermal patch form since 2014. A 2012 study also investigated the use of 5-HTP in an oral spray. Dietary sources of 5-HTP are generally insignificant, although significant tryptophan sources include meat, milk, potatoes, and pumpkins. The best-studied benefit of 5-HTP is its use in mood disorders. This psychoactive effect results from the role of 5-HTP in the production of serotonin.
A 2005 study of a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial confirmed its efficacy in this capacity. However, larger studies are needed to further investigate the efficacy of 5-HTP in mood disorders. The main obstacle to further studies is obtaining the necessary funding, as 5-HTP cannot be patented.

Use of 5-HTP

Taking 5-HTP may help improve mood lows. Initial studies show that 5-HTP can also be used to treat mood disorders. There is also some scientific evidence for its use in relieving symptoms of severe headaches. 5-HTP is also used to relieve fibromyalgia symptoms.

Signs that you may need 5-HTP

The main sign that you may need 5-HTP is low serotonin levels. Serotonin deficiency causes a number of symptoms, including low mood, frustration and stress, and unhealthy sleep habits. You may also benefit from 5-HTP if you suffer from widespread ligament, muscle and tendon problems. People under the influence of 3,4-methylenedioxy-methamphetamine (MDMA), commonly known as "ecstasy," often use 5-HTP to replace the serotonin depleted by this psychoactive drug.
